Darby O’Gill is, most assuredly a Disney movie. I guess that’s why I love it so much. It’s the story of a man and his adventures with the leprechauns of Ireland, with some romance and a little drama thrown in, including some antagonism from the dreaded banshee.
The story itself is very charming and well-told. There’s always that little niggling doubt in the back of your head that maybe he might be making it all up, but you know deep down that no, it’s all real. The romance is also very Disney, but not far-fetched—besides, who wouldn’t fall madly in love with a young Sean Connery, in his first role? While he’s singing?
Speaking of singing, the music in this movie is fantastic. “The Fox Hunt” is by far my favorite—an entire ring of leprechauns on tiny horses, riding around a fiddle-playing man? I loved it. Still love it—and that music is always great. Great fiddle-playing, definitely.
All performances were top-notch, especially Sean Connery’s and Albert Sharpe’s. Sharpe could be anybody’s grandfather, and it’s almost as if he’s narrating the entire story for us. Connery is, as usual, sexy, and that’s really all I need to say on him. He’s just sexy, being all young and stuff. But his performance is also brilliant. The supporting cast also held up nicely, reminding me somewhat of The Quiet Man, where everybody is in everybody else’s business, only this time around, it causes a little more harm than The Quiet Man.
For the time period, the FX in this movie were actually fairly extravagant. The perspective shots of a tiny little leprechaun next a huge, regular-sized man were very passable, and the Banshee was very effective. The up-close shot wasn’t as scary as it could have been, but all far-away shots where her face was hidden and she brushes her hair, wailing the whole time, were very effective and scary.
My rating: Four out of five for its genre. Fun, good-natured, and entertaining.
